Top steaks across Slovakia: where to find quality meat from Bratislava to Košice

  • Curiosities

A great steak is a craft, from choosing the supplier to ageing the meat. But our inspectors care about far more than whether a steak arrives cooked exactly the way it was ordered. They explored restaurants across Slovakia to pick the ones where the kitchen treats meat with respect, the sides are just as good, and you simply feel at ease. From our inspectors’ reviews, we have chosen the places worth crossing half the country for. Among them you will find an artisanal butcher shop, classic steakhouses and fire dining.

Bratislava

D.STEAKHOUSE

Gault&Millau rating: 15/20

For years, D.STEAKHOUSE in Bratislava has delivered consistent quality in its food, its service and everything we mean by warm hospitality. You will find it on Hviezdoslav Square, serving the finest meat from Italy, USDA Prime, A5 wagyu and, from time to time, Simmental beef from Austria. It serves excellent fries and an unbeatable spicy sauce that goes brilliantly with, for example, the Austrian rib eye. Let one of Slovakia’s most experienced sommeliers pick your wine; he is happy to bring out bottles that are not on the list.

TOWERS steak & salad

Gault&Millau rating: 13/20

TOWERS steak & salad is firmly associated with quality steak and skilful handling of it. Friendly staff greet you at the door and seat you at a table laid with a white tablecloth, and there is a good selection of wines by the glass, including French crémant. Besides the steaks, we tried the steak tartare, which was really well seasoned and nicely ground. An interesting option for lunch or dinner outside the centre of Bratislava.

Rio Restaurant & Bar

Gault&Millau rating: 13/20

Rio Restaurant & Bar is a Bratislava fixture that has come a long way. A major renovation gave it a distinctive character, even though it is part of a chain. The menu, built on quality ingredients, features steaks as well as homemade pasta and creative desserts. Locals also love Rio for its wide range of well-made mixed drinks. To finish, order the “chocolate on fire” dessert, served with a “fire show” of flaming absinthe. A good place with an interesting menu and pleasant service, whatever the occasion.

Mäso od Romana

POP of the Year 2025

Our POP of the Year 2025 is Roman Kóňa’s kingdom of meat on Račianska Street. The artisanal butcher shop is open four days a week and, alongside perfect steaks, it also serves food, including its signature steak tartare and a daily meat special. Regular favourites include Dutch schnitzel, French potatoes (a Slovak layered potato bake), bryndzové halušky (potato dumplings with sheep’s cheese) with pork belly, burgers, and unconventional takes on classics such as sviečková (beef sirloin in a creamy vegetable sauce) or stuffed peppers. After a good lunch with a beer, you can leave with some meat and meat products to take home.

Prešov

Steak House Preshow

Gault&Millau rating: 12/20

Steak House Preshow sits on the eastern outskirts of Prešov and is easy to reach by car or public transport. Outside, a motorbike mounted on a tall pole catches the eye; inside, brick walls and wood create an authentic atmosphere. The Steakhouse “dienko”, a wooden board with steak and a generous portion of grilled vegetables or potato gratin, was excellent, and you can finish the meat to your liking on a lava stone. We started with a pork crackling spread and homemade focaccia and sealed the deal with crêpes filled with honey and cinnamon mascarpone and raspberry ragout. The bar is excellent too, from quality rums to fine whiskies.

Košice

Rosto Steak House

Gault&Millau rating: 12.5/20

Rosto Steak House is in the centre of Košice, just a few steps from Hlavná Street. Inside you will find darker tones, wood, large paintings, leather seating and, by the entrance, a fridge full of dry-aged meat. Rosto is lively, friendly and informal; service is quick, and during à la carte service the staff serve wearing gloves. We recommend the entrecôte cut from the fore rib, with a beautiful texture and bold flavour, its typical marbling giving it juiciness and fat. It pairs perfectly with a baked potato and herb butter, and the hot sauces, a rich demi-glace and a green peppercorn sauce, are flawless. As a starter, order the rich beef broth with julienned vegetables, beef and mrvenička, tiny grated egg noodles.

Ohnisko Fire Dining & Brew Bar

Gault&Millau rating: 14.5/20

Ohnisko is no ordinary restaurant. It is a place where fire, smoke and a zest for life come together. It stands on three pillars: fire, smoke and fermentation. The kitchen works with ingredients that were once part of our culinary heritage but rarely make it onto the plate today. You will also find river crayfish and all kinds of local meat here, which are not simply roasted but slowly turned into a real experience of flavour. If you want something beyond a steak from the Josper grill, we tried the barbecue specialities, for example, with ribs so tender the meat fell off the bone. Ohnisko is exactly the kind of place that defines modern Košice gastronomy.
