Rio Restaurant & Bar is a Bratislava staple that has come a long way. An extensive refurbishment gives it a distinctive character, despite it being a part of a chain. It is popular among locals, also thanks to its rich selection of quality cocktails and mixed drinks. The menu, based on high-quality ingredients, features steaks, house-made pasta, and creative desserts. The traditional French fish soup, bouillabaisse, was full of generous pieces of salmon, prawns, clams, and tuna, complemented by parsley and finely chopped celery. We appreciated the professional service, which asked about the preferred doneness of the duck meat when taking the order. Perfectly prepared duck breasts served on blackberry sauce created an interesting contrast with beetroot gel, nuts, and truffle espuma. A touch of extra salt, a smoother consistency of the roasted pumpkin and crispier skin on the duck would have elevated the dish further. The dessert, “the chocolate on fire”, was accompanied by a brief fire show featuring burning absinthe. The juicy chocolate cake with tart raspberry coulis and a chocolate crust with hazelnuts was a fine example of well-balanced sweet and sour flavours. Seasoning and more attentive service could still be improved; however, with its interesting menu and pleasant staff, Rio is a solid establishment suitable for any occasion.
