Chateau Appony is a beautiful manor house in the village of Oponice, where one can briefly step back in time. The interiors, furnishings and surrounding grounds are truly breathtaking, as is the remarkable historic library. The atmosphere, however, did not fully meet our expectations. Music plays an important role in shaping the overall experience, and the background music during our visit felt somewhat at odds with the concept and setting of the château. As for the food, we sampled a celery velouté pleasantly enlivened with oyster mushrooms, a juicy corn-fed chicken with risotto, and an attractively presented raspberry slice. The dishes were enjoyable, yet it was a pity that the service did not match their quality, as a more attentive and polished approach would undoubtedly elevate the restaurant to a higher level. Chateau Appony is a stunning property with enormous potential, but it is worth remembering that atmosphere and hospitality are integral parts of the experience and often carry as much weight as the food itself, if not more.
