Liptov Your Own Way: Tips on Beautiful Places from the Locals

  • Curiosities

Liptov is much more than water parks and ski slopes — it's a region full of excellent food, stunning nature and hidden gems worth exploring. Where to start, what to see and where to stay?

We have a few tips straight from the locals at Hotel Demänová, which makes an ideal base from which all of Liptov is within easy reach.

Hotel Demänová

Into the mountains on foot and by bike

Dozens of marked hiking trails in the surrounding area will take you into the Tatras and the Chočské vrchy. The terrain has something for everyone — from those looking for a leisurely valley walk to those after a climb with serious elevation gain. On the e-bikes offered by Hotel Demänová, you can tackle routes that you wouldn't want to take on foot.

Don't miss the valleys: Kvačianska, Prosiecka, Demänovská, Žiarska and Bobrovecká — where you can also enjoy fresh bryndza at the local sheep farm.

"A great idea is also a gentle hike up to Čereňova skala with its beautiful views over the whole basin, or to the ruins of Liptovský hrad, as well as a romantic walk around Vrbické pleso," says Michal Galko, director of Hotel Demänová.

Jasná — with or without skis

Jasná offers more than 50 km of groomed runs of varying difficulty. While it is Slovakia's largest ski resort in winter, in summer the cable cars become a shortcut to breathtaking views. The summit of Chopok at 2,004 metres above sea level is worth a visit in any season.

Cool off in Liptov's caves

On hot summer days, a visit to Liptov's caves is a welcome relief. Demänovská jaskyňa Slobody is the longest cave system in Slovakia, stretching 43 kilometres. Two accessible sections are open, with a choice of a one-hour or 100-minute circuit. Also worth seeing is the Príbeh vody nature trail along the Demänovka river, which connects both caves.

"Be sure to also visit Demänovská ľadová jaskyňa, Stanišovská jaskyňa and Medvedia štôlňa, which serves as the gateway into Žiarska dolina," adds Michal Galko.

Into town? Liptovský Mikuláš

The centre of Liptovský Mikuláš is just four kilometres from Demänová — truly a stone's throw. The town has a lively café and restaurant scene. A newcomer is G&T Square bistro with a food-and-share concept, where various styles of gin and tonic are paired with a selection of dishes. The bistro is located in the town centre, right behind the synagogue and the cultural centre, with comfortably furnished modern apartments available directly above it, in the heart of the city.

Liptovský Mikuláš is celebrating its 740th anniversary this year, with a rich programme of cultural events running throughout the year.

Liptovská Mara

One of Slovakia's largest reservoirs, surrounded by cycling routes and beaches. In summer, it's a great alternative to water parks, set in beautiful surroundings with views of the Tatras. Nearby options include a newly opened town beach, the beach at Liptovský Trnovec, and the one at Liptovská Sielnica.

The best view over Liptov is from the memorial site of Háj Nicovô, where a military cemetery with a monument awaits. A beautiful panorama and a tree-lined avenue leading to the memorial complete the scene.

And where to stay?

If you need a comfortable base with everything within easy reach, Demänová is ideally situated — between the town and the mountains.

Here you'll find a 4-star boutique gourmet Hotel Demänová with a wellness facility, best suited to those who appreciate intimate accommodation combined with a culinary experience. In summer, cooking moves to the terrace, where regular all-you-can-eat barbecues are accompanied by live music.

For those who want even more, there are private tastings in chef's table format led by experienced head chef Ľubomír Macík, themed evenings at the Humno Demänová event house, and Slovak wine tastings hosted by current Slovak Wine Ambassador Marek Šimášek. The hotel has a long-standing partnership with the National Wine Salon and regularly organises wine events directly in Demänová.

Spirits lovers will appreciate the cigar bar with a curated selection of fine liqueurs from around the world and regular rum tastings.

Those who want an active day can hop on an e-bike and head out into nature, while ski & aqua passes at preferential rates and a ski & aqua bus stop just steps from the hotel are also available. And for relaxation, there is a private wellness area with a sauna.

We hope you enjoy your stay in Demänová!
