Čierna ovca clearly targets tourists and travellers heading north through the Šturec mountain pass or visiting the nearby Harmanecká Cave, who will appreciate the comfort of a crackling fireplace and a plate of hot broth. In summer months, the restaurant also offers outdoor seating with a romantic pond. The kitchen uses seasonal ingredients, and the menu is updated several times a year in line with the changing seasons. The steak tartare leans toward the sweeter side and lacks elements that could make it more distinctive, which is a pity. The broth would benefit from stronger seasoning, and the creamy tarhoňa requires more attention to cooking time. These minor shortcomings in technique and texture are offset by friendly staff and the mountain atmosphere that naturally belongs to hiking. Improvements to the wine list and a return to more creative dishes would be worthwhile, as both domestic and international guests are becoming increasingly discerning each year.
