At Restaurant Afrodita in Čereňany, where the doyen of Slovak gastronomy, Marián Filo, has reigned for years, guests are pampered from the very first moment. The staff, impeccably trained in etiquette, demonstrate first-class professionalism throughout the visit. The romantic manor house is filled with historical artefacts, art, paintings, and an exceptional atmosphere that embodies the luxury and nobility of times past. A similar opulence is reflected on the plates, where the guiding principle of “less is more” could sometimes be applied to greater effect. The presentation of the dishes can be overly elaborate, over-decorated, and crowded with elements that do not always work harmoniously together. This, however, does not detract from the quality of the main ingredients, which are locally sourced and strictly seasonal. The robust beef consommé, thanks to its flavour, presentation, and the accompanying meat strudel, ranks among the best we have ever tasted. It was a pity, however, that the starter failed to shine, as the well-smoked Slovak trout did not quite align with the intended texture of a tartare. This was redeemed by the main course: a succulent chicken of excellent texture, paired with pea purée and superbly seasoned crispy vegetables, creating a strong and satisfying flavour profile that left us content as we departed. Those seeking a sense of history rarely encountered elsewhere and who are willing to forgo minimalist plating will find much to admire at Afrodita in the manor house in Čereňany.
