Good restaurants along the main travel routes have thrived in recent years, as reflected by several listings in our guidebook. One of such establishments is Masarykov Dvor in Vígľaš, now a multifunctional complex combining local produce, high-quality gastronomy, hotel services, and a premium wellness centre. The kitchen, led by Ľubo Herko, is primarily based on house-made products, including bread, meat, and their own beer brewery, distillery, and desserts. The only weakness in the concept is the service, which at times appears more focused on efficiency than on offering genuine hospitality to guests. But back to the food, which consistently maintains its quality, and it is no surprise that bookings ahead are essential during peak times. The hearty bean soup with matured meat evokes fond memories of times at grandparents’, complemented by the house-made bread. The venison, served with a rich sauce featuring subtle aronia notes and a traditional house-made dumpling, continually proves the kitchen’s commitment to excellence. Inspired by the classic Austro-Hungarian tradition, many of the dishes are enhanced with modern techniques and creative combinations. The “Viennese” schnitzel is in quotation marks because it was made with pork but expertly prepared and, surprisingly, coated in panko breadcrumbs. Although the meat was slightly under-salted, the outstanding Viennese-style potato salad more than made up for it. Whether for a brief stop along the road or a full weekend enjoying all that Masarykov Dvor has to offer, this is a place well worth visiting.
